"C" What the Big Deal Is
Jennifer Ouellette is a hero of the science blogging movement, over at Cocktail Party Physics. Her two books -- Black Bodies and Quantum Cats and The Physics of the Buffyverse -- have established her as a clear, thoughtful, and creative voice among popular science writers. We first met a couple of years ago in a DC-based writers group, and since then she has been a pal and invaluable science-writing colleague, supplying critical feedback on early and late drafts of my book. Well let's see - why should all this matter to the Tila Tequila's of the world? You can go esoteric - she's made of carbon, so carbon issues are in her blood (as long as the hemoglobin is working). You can go capitalist - carbon trading represents a vast new futures market someone has to make money off of. You could go empathetic - small, cute creatures with amazing lives will die if we don't do something about AGW. You could go snow bunny - if AGW isn't slowed or stopped, you won't be skiing at Aspen when you are 100. You could go . . . So my point i sthere are a lot of reasons to get Tila and those like her to care. While I hate to Ape others, it is all about the framing in this instance. Oh, and you should probably start with "Scientists never agree on things the way other people do" so as to shoot that denialist approach right in the foot.
